Trickle irrigation (also known as drip irrigation) will require an abstraction licence from January 2020.
This set of slides explain what’s changed and the process for applying for a licence through the Environment Agency.
Most abstractions require a licence, but some have remained exempt.
•Water Act 2003 and Water Framework Directive require the Environment Agency to control all significant abstractions
•Around 4,500 exempt abstractors will need to apply for an abstraction licencefrom 2018
•EA expect to receive around 1000 applications for trickle irrigation in horticulture
•The majority expected to be in South East, East Anglia and Midlands
